The BWBC formed in January 2009 when the Burlington Bicycle Council (BBC) and the Burlington Walking Work Group (BWWG) merged. The two groups chose to merge to create a stronger, unified voice on projects that affect walking and bicycling throughout Burlington.
The BBC was established by the Mayor’s Office in 1990 by the Mayor’s then assistant George Thabault. It was first recognized by the City Council in an April 16, 1990 resolution directing the Department of Public Works to “identify and create a comprehensive system of bikes lanes and routes.”
The BWWG was established after community leaders at various Neighborhood Planning Assemblies passed resolutions in 2005 calling for a Pedestrian Summit and to have the City focus more attention on the walking environment. A second Pedestrian Summit was hosted in 2006 and interested volunteers came together to form the BWWG.
